Mudumalai is a wildlife sanctuary located in the Nilgiris Hills in South India. The location of the sanctuary is just at that point where the Western Ghats meets the Eastern Ghats. It is part of the Nilgiris Biosphere Reserve and is currently being considered for selection as a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee.
Given the importance of this place as a one of natural beauty and native fauna, it is a must to visit it, when exploring the South. Established in 1940, this sanctuary stands at an elevation of 1000 meters and covers 321 sq km. What makes Mudumalai such an interesting place is that it is composed of different types of land forms such as flat lands, undulating greens, grasslands, swamps and valleys and those coming here to study and experience different kinds of natural scenery will find it very interesting and unusual.
The nearest airport to Mudumalai is the Coimbatore International Airport which is eighty four kilometers from here while the nearest railway station is in Udhagamandalam which is sixty four kilometers away. It is also easy to reach the sanctuary from Mysore. The best time to come here is between the month of March and June.
